until my hard heart once again became soft.

The Primaries that made them great have vanished in the blue. No longer office seekers and their minions run around, spending lots of money to be one day White House crowned. The candidates instead are hooked up to slick streaming chats with their rich supporters who are loyal Democrats. Republicans, I'm sad to say, will not make any splash in those states because incumbents don't spend any cash.
