. . . they altered their reckoning . . .

Alma 11:4 --  "Now these are the names of the different pieces of their gold, and of their silver, according to their value. And the names are given by the Nephites, for they did not reckon after the manner of the Jews who were at Jerusalem; neither did they measure after the manner of the Jews; but they altered their reckoning and their measure, according to the minds and the circumstances of the people, in every generation, until the reign of the judges, they having been established by king Mosiah."

A senine or a senum is the value of good barley
in a bushel basket (which does minimize the parley).
So neither gold nor silver was the basis of their gain;
instead they measured ev'rything by ev'ry sort of grain.
A Nephite bank spurned metal as their raw material;
instead they floated loans based upon the use of cereal.
Apparently Mosiah as the king made this great change;
a righteous use of mammon he did try to rearrange.
No shekels and no talents for the Nephites -- they refused
to hobble their economy with old ways much abused.
Seon, shum, and limnah were their coins of solid gold.
Amnor, ezrom, onti, was their silver coin, all told.
With these they managed to construct a realm that still amazes,
before their sinful pride and wars sent all of them to blazes.
So may we prosper with our dollars in a righteous wealth,
and barter not with devils to gain anything by stealth!
